ASL Expert empowers both the hearing and the deaf by creating a community of signers, that when gathered together, help to shape the future of American Sign Language.

ASL Expert Needs Your Help!

For ASL expert to be successful, we need CONTENT! That is, we need YOU to upload yourself signing. If you've signed up for ASL this semester and are learning some sign; please record yourself and get it uploaded! Know someone in the signing community? Tell them about us! We'd really like to see this site succeed, but to do so - we need YOU, the signing community, to pitch in and help shape what ASL really is. Thanks in advance!

Some Wiki-Like Changes

I've just removed the "title" field altogether. Where the site needs it, it will use the first "meaning" that you enter (so order becomes important). Also, I have made it so that anyone can EDIT your dictionary entry, EXCEPT for the video itself. They also cannot delete your video entirely. However, to be more collaborative and "wiki-like," any registered/logged in user can now alter your usage comments or meanings.

Fixed the Upload Bug

I have at least what will be a temporary patch for the upload bug. You no longer need to click "attach" in order to create your dictionary entry. Just browsing to the file is enough.

Some New Features

Just added some cool new features to the site! Once you're logged in, you can click on the "My Account" link at the left and there's a tab to show "My Content," a quick and easy way to review all the content you've contributed to the community!

I've also just added some basic profile information for each user, so by using the "Edit" tab (after clicking "My Account") you can add in the information. Later, we will allow people to search for other users based on their profile fields, so let us know if you have any suggestions!.

OK, let's do this!

I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles, but the site is ready for some content! You should register for an account so you can upload dictionary entries. One thing in particular is that to upload your video you must click the "attach" button after selecting your video, and when it's done you can then hit "submit" at the bottom. I'm going to get this fixed as soon as I can, but in the meantime it still works if you do it this way. Note that it takes a while (a few minutes) before your video is visible on the site.

Getting Underway!

ASL Expert is just getting started! The idea for this idea was birthed in an ASL 2 classroom at Appalachian State University in Western North Carolina (not far from Morganton, NC -- home of North Carolina School for the Deaf).
